The race for Spa Mayor 2013 and why I own an Ak-74

Well it might be only January but the race to city elections have already begun. Tonight I look at the Mayor’s race.
On the Democratic side we have the blond horse Joanne Yepsen.
Yepsen has been increasing her visibility in the last year. The thing about Joanne is she always plays the cautious politician. In the Charter Change debate she never really took a stand. She tried to be a voice of moderation in the gun show debate but she never really satisfied either side. Sources tell me she believes Scott Johnson won’t run for a 4th term. I don’t think she could beat Johnson but might have a good shot against anyone else.

Next the ugly Horse; Henry J."Hank'' Kuczynski

"Hank'' Kuczynski  is perhaps best known as the popular Mayor Ken Kloz’s deputy and  for his pathological hared of Mayor Scott Johnson. "Hank'' wants a piece of Johnson in the worst way. He is also John Franck’s best friend and ally. This is where it gets interesting. Yepsen is backed by the McTygue’s. Hank is backed by McTygue’s friend Franck. Word is Kuczynski declared first dibs on Mayor and he’s not too happy. I don’t think Hank could beat a paper boy.

The dark horse; Brent Wilkes

.
Wilkes is making noises again that he wants a rematch with Johnson this time minus Pat Kane. Wilkes is still the darling of the democratic fringe and charter change crowd but Yepsen has spent a considerable amount of time cultivating the Bolshevik wing of the democratic committee. Maybe she can launch her campaign on International Workers' Day (also known as May Day).Charlie Brown, democratic  committee chair would like that. I hear he plays a mean “Internationale" on his guitar.

On the Republican side.

Scott Johnson: I have no idea if he plans to run again. Three grueling campaigns against three wing nuts {Keehn, Kim and Wilkes} all to be ringleader in a circus.  Hell the man still donates his salary to charity, I wouldn’t blame him if he had enough.

The outside shot if Johnson doesn’t run Matt Veitch;
Without daddy in-laws power at the county Veitch, might be looking to move on. In the last city election Veitch was the largest vote getter narrowly defeating Yepsen in the vote count. This was meaningless of course because both were unopposed but the message wasn’t lost on Yepsen. Veitch’s vote to sell Maplewood manor to a shaky LLC in lockstep with the county republicans and his support of a very bad county budget based on smoke and mirrors may prove to be his Achilles heel in the fall.

Finally some troll at the Saratogian called centerpost keeps asking “why would anyone need to own a AR-15?”

Well I don’t own one but I will try to address that question. My father Joe Tighe was drafted and served in Europe in World War 2. Late in the afternoon of 29 April 1945, Dachau Concentration Camp was surrendered to the American Army by SS-Untersturmführer Heinrich Wicker. My father was one of those liberating solders. After the liberation Dachau became a displaced persons center and my father stayed as a camp guard and on the cleanup crew to July 1946. This event had a lifelong effect on him that he never really got over. His faith in humanity was never fully restored. Returning home he found work in GE then as a Spa Cop and finally as a fireman. He was Chief of the Department when he died at the age of 52 in 1975.My mother had a 38 revolver next to her bed after he died.

We had guns in the house. The fact that we did was never questioned. I joined the Kayaderosseras Fish & Game Club at the age of 6 and I’m still a member. I began shooting competitively at age 8 and continued to age 16. I have owned many guns and sold many in the course of my life. At the age of 21 I received a pistol permit .In 1987 I went through the long and complicated process of getting a federal c and r FFL. A kind of gun dealer’s license. After moving from my house in 2008 I sold off most of my stock and voluntary turned in my FFL to the Federal  Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
I have never owned an AR-15. I find them overengineered, expensive and unreliable. Most of the guns I own know are antiques from the 19th century. Some are museum pieces. They are the best of all the weapons that have passed through my life.

I still belong to the Kayaderosseras Fish & Game Club and I prefer to shoot my Russian AK-74. The people who say that this type of weapon isn’t needed for home defense are correct. I have a pump action 12 gauge shotgun for that. The gun is a destructive beast. Once a year I take it to the range to make sure it functions and to pump a couple rounds through the chamber. It’s loud, kicks like a horse and is no fun to shoot. God help the man who would dare break into my house with a gun or a knife and threaten to harm me or my wife. In 2010 a burglar did try to break into my house when I was heavily involved with exposing NXIVM. I dialed 911 and went for the shotgun. The burglar ran. The sheriff took 22 minutes to get to my house. That is a lifetime. There were two people and have never been caught.

I still love to shoot at the Kayaderosseras 100 yard range. My AK uses cheap Russian ammo is light has no kick and is a delight. Super dependable and with three moving parts it functions in cold, heat or rain. I can set it up on the bench and carefully try to shoot three shots in a tight pattern at 100 yards. This is a mathematical equation as wind and even humidity have to be taken into account. Then as the barrel heats up adjustments for even that have to be taken into account. I compare it to bowling a perfect game. Shooting relaxes me, lowers my blood pressure and even has a Zen like quality. I’m sure some of you will never understand this. Some might even think I’m crazy. But I have tried to explain why I shoot an AK-74 as honestly and clearly as possible.’

Fine writing, sound thinking, contentious conclusions. A few thoughts--

Joanne is at the County level and looking to move up, not down. Hank is a real contender. Brent has probably had enough of this town... but I commend you for not raging against him.

The Republican sitrep is a no-brainer-- It is Johnson's world and we're just visitors. His ego knows no bounds and another run is as certain as another idiotic move by Public Menace Mathiessen.

Your weapon defense is well-writen and particularly sound given your vocation. My ONLY quibble-- Why didn't you get one round off during the home invasion?

And I place a side bet that you get at least TWO "corrections" chiding you for not writing "AK-47."

As in politics--
Idiots
abound.

Happy New Year with added wishes for safety and comfort!

Kyle a ak-74 is an updated ak-47.The criminal ran from me not at me.At that point he is not a threat to
me. I have no desire to shoot anybody

Read you 5-by-5. I've shot the AK-74 and was pre-empting the comments of your "enraged" readers. As for the home invasion, although I admire your restraint...

...I'd prefer to see a moaning suspect waiting 22 minutes for the Sheriff to book him.

Peace always to you and Joyce.

The AK47 and AK74 comment shows just how much some people think they know.........just for fun throw a mac 90 at them

I am of the impression that Scott Johnson will not run for Mayor. The other players are unknown at this point. Matt Vietch as Joanne Yepsen could not and should not run for Mayor.Matt is not a leader, he is a follower. Joanne on the other side ignites fires and than steps away. She reflects no leadership either. Her choice to team up with the McTygues shows poor judgement. The Republican's on the other hand have few choices. Who in the Republican Party has stepped out as a leader in the community, has visibility and foresight to move the city forward and can attract Democratic Votes and the endorsement of the Indepnedence Party. Answer that question and you have your candidate. Matt could get that endorsement but doesn't have the 50 hours a week to invest. He is used to taking direction not giving direction on the political front. As the race comes closer it will become very clear where the lines will be drawn. Watch out for a "dark horse"

Kyle,2150 to headquaters, that's a big 10-4......welcome back! Yepsen is to wishy washy to be Mayor,Hank wants it to bad.....although he could do the job<><><>ok, some parts of it---, Mr.Wilkes is burnt toast and comes across as someone who might be to foreign for the folks,Matt Veicth a good family man but the Mayors' job is to visible for Matts' style and that leaves Scott-----the loon balls love to hammer him but he gets the job done and compared to the mentioned above he has a better grasp of things in general and because of that very simple thing he'll be there as long as he wants, like it or not Kyle he stays within in his governing realm.

Franck may run for mayor. Also I think Mathieson wants it.

Although I do not shoot guns, and have no desire to learn how to, I do respect people who use them responsibly.
Well written piece

What a wonderful post!
I learned to shoot in Boy Scouts. I was on my high school shooting team back in the 70's. I shot Winchesters and the like. My favorite is the Anschutz bolt action target rifle. Mine is made in "West Germany."

I agree that no one really needs AR type weapons for protection, I too prefer the shotgun. It was the 12 and 16 gauge that the pioneers used to forge this great nation so long ago.

Yes, it does take some 20 minutes for the sherif to arrive should you need his assistance. In that time the perpetrator can have his way with his desires and the victims become victims. Dead. Not me. No my wife. Not my family.

Explain one thing to me: Why do Americans scare so easily these days?

Yepsen was interviewed on TV last night. She led the reporter to believe that she added the extra paragraph to the resolution, the one that said "no sale of semi-automatic weapons".
That paragraph was added by Madigan at the council meeting, not by Yepsen.
Yepsen didn't come out and say she did add it, BUT, she also didn't say she DIDN'T add it.

Where will Al Callucci, Dick Wirth, Ken Ivins, and John Tighe be in November? What about Elliott Masie and Phil Diamond.

The Republicans have no one in the wings.
Will skippy run again? I heard he was thinking of running for Mayor.
After all he is the largest vote getter each time?

November elections are coming soon

The mayor's race was very close last time so look for quite a few potentials to throw their hat in the ring. The Democrates will have a much easier time holding on to seats and gaining new ones.
There will be a complete Democratic council in 2014. And maybe 2 at the county level as well.

Why was my name not mentioned here John Tighe?

Did I not blog that I was thinking 'bout a run for mayor?

I have a blog, you know?

I do too!

Can you imagine Skippy running a Council Meeting? Masie and Phil Diamond are Democrats so they really don't fit the agenda for office but they generally support strong Republicans because of their intelligence level. A Republican supported by the Democratic Party could beat Skippy. The could be smart enough to make a deal. We still have thos ebeautiful decorative trash cans out in mid-January and also the wood decorative cans. Where are the green freshly painted steel cans used for winter. Guess Skip has enough dollars in his budget to purchase new cans and do a buyback program at the same time. The only people who respond to buy back programs are people in need of a fix temporarily and than they sell more drugs and buy or steal another illegal gun.Love all those new vehicles. Unfortunately vehicles don't improve quality of work people do especially when the vehicles keep going around in circles. Keep the bar open deputy. It will be a cold winter and we need more DWI convictions!!

I think Johnson runs again! Hank is a joke!

Peter Martin may be a candidate!

Just what we need is Peter Martin. There are enough shenanagins without bringing in a Goldman Sachs man who knows how to make the deal!!! Guess if you can away with perjury you can get away with anything in this city.

Peter Martin is the LAST thing we need right now.

Imagine if Elliott Masie ran for mayor? It's a stretch. He's got other things to do, I'm sure but heck, he's one stand-up guy! He'll wrap up the Jewish vote & Skidmore, hands down. I'm sure a good lot of us on the east side neighborhood would support him. It's worth the look.

Civility and decorum would return at the very least to city council meetings. Although our fair commissioners would need to take evening classes (adult-Ed) so they could understand the modern English language the way it was meant to be understood.

I can see it now: The citizenry considers voting on raising the IQ of our elected officials to at least 90 if not 100 on the IQ scale. This of course in no way applies to Mayor Scott Johnson. He's a friggin genious next to this group. But hey-- we elected them & that's the best we can do?

Saratoga's city council is devolving to such a procurious level (Google it guys) -- albiet on par with Mike Judge and his movie 'Idiocracy.'

Reality bites, eh?

Hank is a nice guy, but notoriously lazy. He has spent the last 5 years, eating, drinking, pontificating and expelling flatus orally.

Joanne never met a camera she didn't face bake. She is famous for taking credit for other people's work. Plus, being long in the tooth and a public drunk doesn't help.

Brent is a phoney. He is only involved in politics to support his private business. He blew in to Saratoga, and he'll blow out of Saratoga. So in other words, he doesn't just suck, he blows.

Peter Martin is another phoney. He is a rich phoney. Check him out. I think he's a Republican from around Delmar, but he's really from Pennsylvania. Plus, he bought John Hogan's house, promptly spent a fortune on it and then monkeyed around with his assessment. Dangerous combo platter: Martin, Franck and Breyo.

Matt Veitch. A swell guy. Genuinely nice. He just has too many relatives on the City payroll. Also, he does seem a bit slow.

Dark Horses: Michele Madigan, Phil Klein, Linda Toohey, Joe Dalton, and(you read it here first) that creepy Turner dude from Skidmore.

People being mentioned here for mayor make me sick to my stomach! Not one legit candidate. The comments are even worse. At least Wilkes and Johnson have brains!

Anonymous said...

Mathieson for Mayor???!!!!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! I'm spitting milk through my nose at that one.

And whoever wrote that Brent Wilkes "doesn't just suck, he blows." is my new hero. Best. Line. Ever.

In his first campaign Scott Johnson stood in front of a camera addressing the po'folk of the Terraces about how he grew up there from approx. age 12. He continued to mention his successful life and how his peeps in the hood could be just like him.
The declaration was a repulsive and patronizing suck up to lower income voters. Only someone with a manipulative flair could have said those things and done so little during his tenure.
Yes, he is smart- like a fox.
Sure his salary goes to non-profits.
Big Deal. Johnson doesn't need the money and you can't buy yourself good press like that for any less.
I've seen him caught in a lie at a city council meeting. Man, did that crack his usual poker face.
It is time overdue to have new council members whose families have NOT been here 70 years or more and believe city government is a friends, favors and family plan.

John, thanks for writing the line, I don't want to kill anyone. When I hear from of other gun owners about their anger and how they would like to blow away some people I walk away.

Yepsen wants you and me to give up our right to bear arms but remains silent on Obamas'sale of tanks and jet fighters to Egypt and the American hating Muslim Brotherhood,I could never vote for her.

I would still like yepson to tell me where I can get on of those Burhmaster weapons? I called Burhmaster fuels, and they told me they are fresh out.....

Do you realize how rare it is that a person defends themselves with a firearm? over 500 die a year from "accidental" discharges. As somebody who has been shot at by an AK, there wasnt much being done with handguns and shotguns, all 30 or so that were up against this person. Cops are among some of the worst shots I have ever seen, how well do you think people without training will do? Or the old lady next door? Or the overworked untrained teachers that people are looking to give guns to? Throw in the stress and fear, and some people turn tail and run, I witnessed it and he took his MP5 with his ass he ran. Studies find no direct link between video games and violence, look at the dutch, they have double the video game usage, no where close to the violence we have. Japan has very strict gun ownership rules and guess what...they had 2 gun deaths in 2009 I believe was the year. They have violent movies and games, more so than we do. Go from country to country and the proven correlation is that when gun ownership goes up, so does the murder/suicide/accidental shootings. it's the guns stupid....
